Shipping containers can have a useful life beyond refrigerated storage and blast freezing. In an unusual community project, Coolworld’s Irish team helped transform a container into a fully equipped internet café for Mua Hospital in Malawi.
The project combined the delivery of essential medical supplies with a practical way for the hospital to generate ongoing income.
The container was prepared for shipment with medical equipment and computer hardware inside. Once unloaded at Mua Hospital, it was designed to be placed on a solid base and commissioned as an internet café.
Equipped with eight computers and a dining area, the café would provide internet access for patients, visitors and local residents who might otherwise have limited opportunities to get online. It would also serve visitors to the nearby Kungoni visitor centre.
Income from the café was intended to help the hospital purchase essential medical supplies and continue supporting the surrounding community.
The project built on a longstanding relationship with Dr Valerie Donnelly, who had visited Malawi several times and supported the hospital’s work with women and maternity patients. Fundraising had previously enabled the installation of a satellite dish in 2011, providing the foundation for the internet café.
Dr Donnelly welcomed the container conversion as a cost-effective way to make donations go further, combining the transport of medical equipment with a facility that could provide lasting benefits.
The Mua Hospital Appeal fundraising committee, Anne Creedon, Dr Donnelly, Kevin O’Brien, Maura O’Sullivan and Tony Quinlan, also raised funds to fill the container with medical supplies. Preparation of the café supported local jobs and suppliers in Ireland.
The project demonstrates the versatility of the containers used in refrigerated storage and blast freezer applications. With suitable conversion, a container can become a practical, accessible space that continues to serve a valuable purpose beyond its original use.
For Coolworld’s Irish team, this was an opportunity to put that versatility to work in support of a hospital and its community.
At Coolworld, we believe that looking after people extends beyond our day-to-day work. It means supporting the communities we’re part of and finding practical ways to help those further afield.
The Mua Hospital project brought together our Irish team, local suppliers and dedicated fundraisers to give a shipping container a lasting purpose. By supporting local jobs in Ireland and creating a source of income for the hospital in Malawi, the project connected people working towards a shared goal.
We’re proud to have played a part in an initiative that puts people first, helping the hospital continue its vital work and giving the surrounding community greater access to the internet.
