Project Brief

The client is a large provider of industrial, medical and special gases in Ireland and internationally. It forms part of a world leading gases and engineering company with almost 50,000 employees globally.

The client services a global manufacturer of ICT components who had a requirement for large quantities of a product that is both toxic and flammable. The requirement was temperature controlled containers which would allow this product to be stored under 4 degrees celsius.

Due to the flammable nature of the gas, conventional refrigerated storage is not suitable for this project and the volatile nature of the gas itself would case it to degrade and become unusable if not stored below 4 degrees Celsius. In order to resolve these issues, CRS Pharma Solutions were tasked to source, install and maintain an ATEX cold store solution which provided a suitable and secure environment for the product.

Challenges

The challenge for the client was to find temperature controlled storage made of spark free components. ATEX certified products are highly specialised and have significantly longer lead times than standard refrigeration equipment.

Additionally, the client needed a partner who could provide the specialist maintenance and support requirements of the cold storage solution and ATEX components.

Solutions

In order to meet the client’s requirements for the project, ATEX components were sourced from Europe and the US, and subsequently brought to CRS Pharma Solutions’ own facility in order to assemble and retrofit them to match the design specification.

Temperature control monitors were embedded in the unit and linked to a communications system, meaning that both CRS and on site staff are notified immediately of any temperature variation which threatens the integrity of the gas product.

CRS Pharma Solutions included two cooling units which operate independently of each other and alternate throughout the day, and installed a backup generator which will automatically come into effect in the event of a power failure. These specifications improve the reliability of the system, ensuring maximum operational ability of the unit and security of its contents.

According to the clients need for the project, CRS Pharma Solutions are first-responders for any issues concerning the refrigeration unit as they provide both preventative maintenance and call-out support services, reducing the risk of damage to the high value product.

Results

The client can store the product in a temperature controlled environment for their client on a large scale while meeting highly specialised certifications.

Cliif was looking for a 20ft refrigerated container to be situated at the rear of their premises. In particular the location of this container was to be very close to a residential area so noise was a huge concern for Cliff. John arranged a meeting with Cliff and Patrick Tyrrell at CRS headquarters in Kildalkey to discuss the technical requirements for the unit and John and Patrick showed Cliff the various motors available but he eventually chose a Super Silent Cold Store unit which the CRS installation team delivered and fitted within two weeks.

Project Brief

Back in 2014, most of the world did not know what the Ebola disease was, nor how quickly or easily that it could spread. That changed, nearly overnight, as an Ebola outbreak reached crisis proportions in West Africa with cases being reported around the world. As of January, World Health Organization (WHO) figures showed nearly 22,000 cases of Ebola in nine countries in the past year since the epidemic began in Guinea. This includes nearly 8,700 deaths. Pharmaceutical companies quickly jumped into the race to develop an Ebola vaccination, with several currently in clinical trials to prove safety and effectiveness.

Challenges

The primary challenges facing CRS Pharma Solutions were time constraints. With the Ebola outbreak reaching crisis proportions, pharmaceutical companies were quickly racing to develop a vaccination. With over 8000 deaths reported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) time was of the essence.

Other challenges facing CRS Pharma Solutions include the stability of the product contained. Patrick Tyrrell of CRS stated that “While proper storage and transport temperatures have always been crucial in the pharmaceutical industry, it is vital in new products as the reaction of various components during temperature fluctuations are often unknown. For this reason, companies want to store the product as cold as possible.”

Solutions

In order to meet the client requirements of the project, CRS Pharma Solutions supplied a new Ultra Low Temperature container cold store.

CRS Pharma Solutions in-house project management team immediately began co-ordinating the with global supplier partners and the internal Pharmaceutical storage and GDP (Good Distribution Practice) specialists to ensure the Ultra Low Temperature solution was delivered on time.

To ensure the solution met the clients requirements, CRS Pharma Solutions commissioned a new highly insulated cold store body, featuring a minimum insulation of 105mm. This would ensure a consistent temperature within the chamber and prevent temperature instabilities impacting the safety of the product within.

Having a long term relationship with Thermo King was critical to the success of this project and the use of a Thermo King Super Freezer to ensure the temperature required by the client was met. CRS worked with Thermo King to secure the product in the time required to ensure deadlines were met.

Results

The project was completed on time and made available to the client within weeks of the original enquiry. It is currently being used in the fight against the Ebola outbreak storing vaccination products at the desired temperatures.
