A cooling tower cools warm process water by using evaporation. A small amount of water evaporates, and that evaporation removes heat from the remaining water.

A dry cooler cools warm process water with outside air only. The water stays inside a closed coil or circuit, and fans blow ambient air across it. No evaporation is used.

A chiller does more than reject heat to the outside air. It uses a refrigeration circuit to actively cool water or glycol to a precise set temperature, even when that temperature is lower than the outside air can naturally achieve.

In short:
A cooling tower uses water evaporation.
A dry cooler uses outside air.
A chiller uses mechanical refrigeration.

What is a cooling tower?

A cooling tower is a heat rejection system that removes unwanted heat from a cooling water circuit. It helps to maintain safe and efficient operating temperatures. Wet cooling towers are typically used when a process generates significant heat and requires continuous cooling water circulation.

Businesses can rent or hire cooling towers for temporary process cooling during planned or emergency situations, with flexible cooling tower rentals available for short- and long-term requirements.

Where and why is a cooling tower needed?

Cooling towers are used to remove excess heat from industrial cooling water systems, helping businesses maintain safe operating temperatures and continuous production. They are commonly used across manufacturing, chemical processing, food and beverage production, data centres, and HVAC applications where reliable process cooling is essential. A cooling tower fan plays a key role in dissipating heat by drawing air through the tower, helping maintain efficient cooling performance.

Temporary cooling tower rentals are often required during breakdowns, planned maintenance, seasonal peaks, plant expansions, or when additional cooling capacity is needed to keep operations running smoothly. Many organisations choose to rent or hire cooling towers to avoid costly downtime and maintain business continuity.
