Why is HVAC crucial for data centres?

Data centres are indispensable and of great importance in this digital world. They house servers and other equipment that operate continuously, often under heavy loads. This equipment generates significant amounts of heat, and without effective climate control, this can lead to overheating, system failures and even data loss.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) plays a vital role in maintaining the ideal environment for data centres. Proper temperature and humidity control not only ensures optimal equipment performance, but also extends its lifetime and reduces the risk of breakdowns. This makes HVAC an indispensable investment for data centres, regardless of their size or complexity.

Temperature and humidity control for server rooms

Maintaining stable temperature and humidity is essential to prevent malfunctions and physical damage to sensitive equipment. Below is an overview of why these factors are important and how HVAC provides them:

1. Temperature control:

• Servers operate optimally at temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.

• HVAC systems remove excess heat and prevent overheating, even during peak loads.

• Emergency cooling options and redundant systems ensure that temperatures remain constant even in the event of a failure.

2. Humidity control:

• Too high humidity can lead to corrosion and short circuits.

• Too low humidity increases the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD), which can damage equipment.

• HVAC systems provide an ideal humidity level of 40-60%, minimising both risks.

3. Air circulation and filtration:

• Effective airflow prevents hotspots within the data centre.

• Air filters remove dust and other particles that can cause damage to sensitive hardware.

HVAC as an indispensable partner for data centres

HVAC systems are the foundation of a reliable and efficient data centre. They provide a stable, safe and cost-effective environment in which servers perform optimally.

Specific HVAC solutions for data centres

The unique nature of data centres requires HVAC systems designed specifically for this environment. Coolworld offers a range of solutions to suit the specific requirements of data centres:

1. Cooling units with redundancy:

• Redundant cooling systems (N+1 configurations) ensure continuity in case of failure of one system.

• Temporary cooling units can be quickly deployed during breakdowns or refurbishments.

2. Precision cooling (CRAC and CRAH units):

• Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) and Air Handling (CRAH) units provide precise temperature control.

• Ideal for both small server rooms and large-scale data centres.

3. Heat recovery:

• Modern HVAC systems can convert excess heat into usable energy, reducing both costs and carbon footprint.

4. Remote monitoring and alerts:

• Advanced monitoring tools ensure that HVAC systems are continuously monitored.

• In case of abnormalities, technicians are immediately alerted, minimising downtime.

5. Flexible temporary solutions:

• In case of breakdowns or expansions, Coolworld offers mobile HVAC systems that can be quickly deployed without interrupting critical processes.
